Never surrender! Never give up on your dreams! Keep fighting! And all such similar maxims are in fact poor advice.

Everything is situational.

Of course, I'm not suggesting one never dream or always give up on a dream.  But what have your dreams been over time? As a child your dream may have gone something like this: I'm going to be a basketball player and an astronaut and and firefighter and a dinosaur!

And likely you meant every word of that. Of course, dinosaur is impossible, and as you aged, perhaps one or more of the above was let go as well.

Should you give up on your dreams? When they no longer serve their purpose, of course. Or when you come to the realization that the are unobtainable at the present time, yes. Let them go.

They no longer work for you, no longer are helpful.

Sometimes though, a dream is good but not for now. It is something you can come back to in the future, or something to pursue in a different fashion, for example, as a hobby instead of a career.

Letting go of dreams, changing your dreams, setting aside your dreams, are all viable options.

Here are some questions for your journal:

  • What dreams, aspirations, goals, etc. have you let sail?
  • Why did you let the dreams go?
  • How did you feel about letting them go at the time?
  • How do you feel now?
  • What did the dream mean to you then and what does it mean to you now?
  • Would you still like to pursue that particular dream?
  • Can you revise the dream in anyway to make it workable now?
  • What stopped you from the pursuit of that particular dream and what is stopping you from pursing the dream now?
Have fun journaling.
